The Alignment of a Vehicle is mad up of three main measurements. Camber, Caster, and Toe. Camber and Toe are easier to understand. Think of the toe as the direction the tires are facing. Generally, you want the Toe as close to zero as possible. This means that the tires are pointing straight forward when driving down the road. Camber is the lean of the tire. Some people prefer their camber to be very negative or the tires leaned in at the top. Castor is a little bit more complicated. Castor is how far forward the wheel is leaning on its turning axis. When all three measurements are correct, your car drives as intended. Each Vehicle manufacturer supplies a Specification for each vehicle. The picture below shows a vehicle before the Alignment. It is close but just outside of Spec.
There are many tell tale signs that your Alignment may be out of Specification. First is that your vehicle does not drive straight. If you release the steering wheel while driving down the road your vehicle should continue in a straight line. If it doesn’t you likely have an alignment issue. Next, tires wearing unevenly is a common sign of poor alignment. Many times, we see tires that are severely worn on the inside but have plenty of tread on the outside. There are many reasons that your Alignment can be out of specification. The most common is a Faulty Part in your Steering or Suspension System. Ball Joints, Control arm Bushings, Tie Rod Ends, and Struts are the most common parts to fail and cause alignment issues. When any of these parts are replaced, it requires that the vehicle be Aligned properly. Below is Nate Adjusting the Toe on a Vehicle that needed a Tie Rod to correct the alignment.
