The Headlights on your car are one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on your car. They enable you to drive after dark and make your vehicle more visible during the day. When a Headlight is out it not only can be dangerous, you may also get a citation. Nobody wants that. The most common reason for Headlight Failure is a Faulty Headlight Bulb. Headlight bulbs use a tiny filament to create a whole lot of light. When one of the filaments gets too hot it can burn up and cause the bulb to fail. Below is a close up photo of a headlight bulb. You can see the tiny wire filaments.
Many new Vehicles use HID (high-intensity discharge) headlights. These are brighter than normal headlights, but come with their own problems. We see HID ballasts go bad fairly often. This is the part that sends voltage to the light and regulates the current. If this part fails the lights will not work. Here is a picture of an HID Headlight that quit working.
The third most common failure for headlights is the Fuse. If a fuse burns out the headlight system will not get power at all. Below our Technician, Nathan, works to diagnose an issue with the Headlights on an Escalade. Checking the Fuses is step number one.
